Introduction

The Department for Transport, Department for Transport (DfT) is responsible for the implementation in the UK of the European Community Directive 96/35/EC. This Directive is about the appointment and training of safety advisers involved in the carriage of dangerous goods by road. By the 1st January 2000, any company or other organization that transports dangerous goods (and certain other organizations involved in report related activities), should have appointed a qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser or Dangerous Goods Safety Advisers Consultant.

Before their appointment, DGSA's must gain a Vocational Training Certificate (VTC) by passing approved examinations. The DfT is responsible for the approval of the examinations and it has appointed the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) as its agent.
